Nationally, Idaho ranks 50/50 in physicians per capita yet has led the nation in population growth for the last five years—a problem that is compounded by an aging healthcare workforce. Help the School of Health and Medical Professions (SHAMP) improve access to health care for Idahoans.
Innovation and growth in Idaho’s health care workforce
Idaho’s need for health care professionals requires innovative solutions. The SHAMP Excellence Fund supports hands-on learning opportunities for health and medical students, like the Rural Underserved Opportunities Program (RUOP) which immerses medical students in rural and underserved communities to develop their understanding of primary care and community health systems.
Training Idaho’s future providers starts in the classroom. Help expand the state-of-the-art D.A. Huckabay M.D. Medical Education Building and create more space for collaborative pre-clinical training.
Your gift to the SHAMP Excellence Fund helps expand hands-on learning opportunities, strengthen Idaho’s health care workforce and improve access to care for communities across the state.
Scholarships Help Idaho Medical Students Become Idaho Physicians
Help Idaho WWAMI educate Gem State medical students. In partnership with the University of Washington School of Medicine, we have proudly served as Idaho's medical school since 1972.
Rural community doctors earn about $60,000 less than the national average, meaning Idaho-trained physicians may choose to practice in more urban areas of our state. By lowering their cost of education, you can help Idaho-trained physicians remain in Idaho.
Your gift to the Idaho WWAMI Scholarship Fund reduces student loan debt, helping keep Idaho-trained doctors in Idaho and making rural service more attainable.
Scholarships shape the next generation of health care professionals
Idaho’s health care worker shortage impacts every aspect of care. SHAMP’s programs address these gaps—the Master of Science in Gerontology trains leaders to improve care for older adults, the Doctor of Anatomical Sciences prepares educators for vital faculty roles and the Doctor of Clinical Psychology will train clinical psychologists to serve Idaho communities.
Scholarships play a vital role in making these programs accessible. Your gift supports Idaho’s future health care leaders, helping to improve care and expand access where it’s needed most.
ECHO Idaho Supports Continuing Medical Education
As a part of SHAMP, Extension for Community Health Outcomes (ECHO) Idaho offers Idaho health professionals the opportunity to build a community using video conferencing over lunch breaks to bring health care workers together in real-time, collaborative sessions.
Your gift to the ECHO Idaho fund helps safeguard ongoing series such as K12 Education, Opioid, Pain and Substance Use Disorders and Pediatric Autism, as well as develop new offerings.
Enhance Student Experiences with North Idaho AHEC
Supported at U of I since 2017, the North Idaho Area Health Education Center (NI-AHEC) develops a pipeline of healthcare professionals equipped to meet the unique needs of Idaho’s rural and underserved communities. NI-AHEC partners with local organizations to provide learning opportunities for students in grades 7-12, health professions students and health care professionals.
Your gift to North Idaho AHEC helps sustain health career exploration events like “Doc for a Day” and “Hands-On Health Care” for regional middle and high school students and experiential training for medical and health professions students.
Idaho Office of Underserved and Rural Medical Research
The mission of the Idaho Office of Underserved and Rural Medical Research is to improve the health of Idaho's underserved and rural communities by integrating medical education, research and service to advance clinical practice and patient care in our state. The office researches healthcare systems and health outcomes in rural and disadvantaged areas. They are currently examining heart failure care, chronic conditions and mental health to improve health outcomes for Idahoans.
Your gift to the Idaho Office of Underserved and Rural Medical Research supports this research and helps determine important trends in Gem State healthcare.
