The University of Idaho College of Science places a very high emphasis on undergraduate research. Almost every student has the opportunity to work on original research in the lab or the field, in many cases working alongside faculty and graduate students.
Students have access to professors at the University of Idaho that they probably would not have at larger institutions. In a recent survey of College of Science students, 70 percent of graduating seniors reported participating in original research. Of those students, 68 percent worked collaboratively with a faculty member, and 34 percent expected to have a publication from their research. These undergraduate research experiences are very valuable for students, whether they are going immediately into careers in industry, or continuing their education with graduate studies.
Recent graduates who have participated in undergraduate research have gone on to graduate studies at a number of prominent schools, including Stanford, the University of Michigan, UCLA, Cal Tech, UC Davis, the University of Washington, the University of Illinois, and the University of British Columbia.
